Kai Ken excel at sports and other challenges! Below you can find some information on available sports, and we encourage everyone to get out there to try something new and have fun with your pup!
Conformation
Conformation inolves having a judge evaluate each dog’s structure and movement, comparing them with the breed standard.
AKC
In AKC Kai Ken are an FSS breed (Foundation Stock Service), and can participate in FSS and Open Conformation shows. Kai Ken are designated for the Working Group once they graduate from FSS, and Miscellaneous classes.
Kai Ken can earn an AKC CM Certificate of Merit title once 15 conformation points earned. The Certificate of Merit (CM) title is an introductory title to AKC conformation events. The AKC event type is ‘OPNC‘.
UKC
In UKC Kai Ken are in the Northern Group and can participate in any conformation show. In addition to regular classes, some UKC shows also offer altered conformation classes for neutered dogs.
Kai Ken can earn CH Champion, GCH Grand Champion, and Gemstone titles in UKC provided they earn a certain number of points and complete a certain number of challenges.
Lure Coursing
Kai Ken are allowed to participate in two types of coursing events: Fast CATs and all-breed coursing ability tests (CATs). We have found that most Kai Ken take to lure coursing pretty instinctively, the sport takes little to no training, and is a whole lot of fun for them (excitement is encouraged)!
Fast Coursing Ability Tests (Fast CATs)
Fast CATs are like the 100 yard dash for your dog. This is a great way to encourage interest and build cofidence for both types of lure coursing. Dogs go one at a time, and will chase two plastic bags attached to a motorized line down a track/chute (with fences on both sides). The dog’s run time is measured with timing gates at the start and end of the track, and then converted to miles per hour for points. Depending on the dog’s height, their mph is multiplied by a handicap. The AKC event type is ‘FCAT‘.
Titles include:
- BCAT: 150 points
- DCAT: 500 points
- FCAT: 1000 points

All-Breed Coursing Ability Tests
Cousring ability tests include a dog chasing three plastic bags on a motorized continuous loop. Only one dog is on the course at a time, and the goal is to complete the 600 yard course within two minutes while maintaining interest in the lure. The AKC event type is ‘CABT‘.
Titles include:
- CA: 3 completed tests
- CAA: 10 completed tests
- CAX: 25 completed tests; and then every 25 runs thereafter (CAX2 = 50, CAX3 = 75, etc.)

Dock Diving
A sport for water-loving Kai! Dock diving involves having your dog run off a dock and launch into a pool to retrieve their favorite toy. Their jump distance is measured for scores and points.
Events are offered through North America Diving Dogs and AKC honors titles earned through NADD.
